Summer has come to an end, which means school is just getting started. It can be a crazy time of year with the kiddos going back to school. Everyone travels to school in different ways, but we all want our kids to be safe. Here are a few safety tips that you and your kids can follow throughout the year to stay safe . . .

Walking

  • Don’t talk to strangers 
  • Stay on the sidewalks 
  • Use crosswalks 
  • Look both ways before you cross the street 
  • Don’t be a distracted walker
  • Don’t walk until traffic stops
  • Watch for turning vehicles 

Biking 

  • Check tires before getting on your way 
  • Carry things in a backpack or basket
  • Always wear a helmet
  • Be aware of your surroundings 
  • Look for debris in the road
  • Look both ways for traffic 
  • Choose a safe route 
  • Be sure to ride on the right side of the road
  • Lock your bike when you get to your destination

Driving 

  • Always wear your seatbelt
  • Don’t speed in a school zone
  • Be sure to drop your child off in the appropriate lane 
  • If you drop your child off somewhere else besides the school be sure there is a crosswalk and crossing guard
  • Make sure you and your child know where to meet after school

School Bus 

  • Know your school bus number
  • Make sure you know where the bus stop is
  • Be sure to know what time the bus comes
  • Stay sitting down while the bus is moving 
  • If you have to cross in front of the bus wait for the bus driver’s “ok”
